This is a very disturbing film. Your anxiety level is high the entire time, long before you see the backrooms. The set design looks like it was designed by someone that masturbates to MC Escher art. Nothing in this film will make you laugh. I didn’t quite understand the ending so I need to look online to have someone explain it to me.
Another Modern Horror gem, back-to-back with Obsession, both giving the middle finger to Hollywood. Their box office numbers have been huge–another indicator that people want original screenplays.
Big Hollywood can spend half a billion dollars on a franchise movie budget if they want, just to break even, (Marvel! **cough cough) or they can work with a micro budget, an original smart screenplay, and show young viewers why everyone should be seeing movies for the first time on the big screen. If horror films by Youtubers are what brings audiences back to theaters, then so be it. Hollywood needs a fresh, young face and mind, and audiences deserve it, too.
Hurray to the people behind Backrooms and Obsession (which I have seen 3 times in theaters, it is so fucking good), I look forward to seeing all of you receive your flowers come award season. Backrooms will easily get nominations for Original Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Director, Set Design, and Sound Editing.
