Travel Tips: Go Big or Stay Home

Back in 2017 or ’18 a coworker asked me how did I afford all my trips abroad. I had just spent a week in Ireland and the following month I was going to Cancun for a week.

My advice was simple but unconventional: Don’t think, “this is how much money I have, where can I afford to go?” INSTEAD think like this, “this is where I want to go, now how can I afford to do it?”

Granted, when I was doing all this traveling I only had credit cards and a phone bill but still, the planning goes the same way. You have to have a destination in mind first before you think about the money. When I wanted to travel I had an incentive to try harder at work and made bigger commissions with my sales. I offered to work overtime. I checked airline prices multiple times a week.

Be spontaneous but not so spontaneous that you need to go to the U.S. Embassy in London for a ticket home. It’s a fun story that my friends, family, and coworkers know that I will one day write in a memoir, short story, or who knows…📽
