My Mother/ Mi Madre

Describe a family member.

I can’t capture my mother’s personality in one post so fyi.

My mother is a social butterfly and demands the attention of everyone in the room. She would capture your ear at a party because she can do a really incredible Mexican Grito (scream). I’ve never tried.

The first thing my Mother would tell you after meeting you is that her Mother died a few years after having her and that she grew up without a mother. She needs you to know that.  She reminds me often that she grew up without a mother, as though I forgot and should pity her for it, or be (more?) grateful that I have her.

I can go months without speaking to my mother.  Not that I don’t want to speak to her, I just don’t need to. It’s like going to the store, I like that it’s there but if I’m not out of food, why should I go?  I think the feeling is mutual.

She isn’t the smartest person when it comes to money that I know, but she is the best at saving it. I learned from her that you don’t need to hustle if you are great at saving your money.

My mother can walk with a bucket on her head, I’m serious. She learned to do it as a child in Mexico, carrying water from the river in a bucket on her head and her hands full with other things.

I get my Mexican work ethic from her–work always comes first.
