On Second Watch: The Fog (2005)

This film came out 20 years ago and I thought it was crap.  This movie was going to launch Smallville’s Tom Welling to uber stardom but the box office wouldn’t play along. It made only less than $30M domestically on an $18M budget. Rotten Tomatoes gave it only 4% (what?!?!?!!!).  On today’s rewatch I realized a few things. Here are some points on where it all went wrong:

  1. It should have never been categorized as a horror movie. The jump scares kinda fell flat. It’s more historical thriller than anything else.
  2. Nudity is good, when used correctly. Tom Welling shirtless (yes please!) but a scene with him dressing and shower sex? Less is more. Less sex means more people will see the movie. Lots of Puritans in those theater seats!
  3. Maggie Grace had more screentime and lines than Tom Welling, even though it was advertised as his movie. Sad face. Most of his lines are him calling out her name because he can’t see her in…wait for it…The Fog! Lol. But seriously, if he had some backstory and character development than that would have brought the ladies to the theater for a second helping.
  4. If a movie takes place in Oregon, then use a real Oregon town!  Don’t make up a place. The movie took place in Oregon but everything about it screamed East Coast.
  5. Lastly, I wish they didn’t make Selma Blair’s character a mom. Not every woman over the age of thirty needs to be responsible for another human being. If she was just Tom’s side chick that would have been enough.
