The Slumber Party Massacre (1982)

Director: Amy Holden Jones—Producer: Santa Fe Productions

This is the kind of movie that dreams are made of. We have a suburban neighborhood, high school students, parents away and a psycho on the loose. Male and female viewers alike would enjoy this film. It has senior girls playing a competitive game of basketball in gym class and then moves on to the mandatory bare breasts shot in the locker room.

Psycho killer with a drill! Look out! Two times women hear on the radio that this guy is out there but don’t even flinch. Shortly after eating some potato chips people start dying. Guys, girls, the pizza boy, everybody! When the killer finally says something it sounds like he is a rapist rather than a drill-slinging maniac. I prefer it when they have nothing to say. By the end the men are all gone and the women are left to fend for themselves. Overall, it pays to not get invited to a slumber party.

The script was written by a woman and directed by a woman. That might surprise a lot of people like me, who assume this is some male fantasy but it caters more towards women in the end. The copy of Playgirl, athletic, empowered females and a lot of women not dying.
