Y Tu Mama Tambien (2001)

Director: Alfonso Cuaron—Producers: Anhelo Producciones

This is the Mexican art film that I base all Mexican art films on. It is provocative from beginning to end–starting with an explicit sex scene. For me this was the first time seeing Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal.

There are French films and there are Mexican films. French films are dark and upsetting. This film is upsetting but not dark. It’s life, good things and bad things happen. People screw their best friend’s girlfriend, cheat on spouses and die of cancer.

The most upsetting things that happen in the film are what the narrator says. I don’t want to believe what the narrator says. I am a realist but I hope that people see each other again. Brilliant film but you don’t feel good at the end.
